I found a spot on the bathroom ceiling. Checked the roof and found that the leak was coming from the area around a fan exhaust vent and would have to be fixed. I checked on Nextdoor and asked some friends and neighbours for a reputable company. After narrowing it down I called Curry Roofing and was prepared to go ahead if I thought it was reasonable. The Curry Roofing fellow that came was very professional. He checked the ceiling spot with a moisture meter and said it was not wet. He then got a ladder on the outside and walked around the roof. When finished he quoted $650 to repair the problem but strongly recommended we replace the roof. He talked at length about quality shingles and the spiral nails they use to keep them from popping. He also talked about how I could transfer the new roof warranty if we sold our home. He gave me a quote and I said I would think it over and let him know if we wanted to go ahead. He suggested I not wait a long time as they were getting busy and it needed to be scheduled to avoid delays. I decided that after such a hard sales pitch on a new roof, I would get a second opinion. I chose Mark Kaufman Roofing for the second opinion based on reading some things in Nextdoor and one neighbours recommendation. The fellow that came out (Tyler) checked the bathroom ceiling as before. He did not use a moisture meter. Instead, he got a ladder to go into the attic to see what he thought of the leak and the damage on the inside above the spot. He came back down saying all the wood was in good shape and the spot had mostly dried. I asked him about the overall condition of the roof, he thought the shingles themselves had another few years in them and that the repairs would be $450. His quote detail in explaining the work to be done was almost the same in explanation as the Curry quote. Both young men were professional and the lead time for repairs was about the same. The warranties were the same but Curry Roofing wanted a 50% deposit up front. Mark Kaufman did not ask for any down payment prior to the work being done. I was not happy to be pressed with buying a new roof when I felt I had more time with the existing shingles so, I went with Mark Kaufman Roofing. Today the repair crew of Leonardo & Zefereino (not sure of the spelling?) came to fix the roof. They did an excellent job and were professional in every regard. They answered some additional questions about roofing for me as well as doing a roof walkabout to check any other small things that might be wrong. They left us feeling very good about choosing their company. I'm sure there are other good roofing companies out there. For us, we highly recommend Mark Kaufman Roofing and will be comfortable with them in the next few years when the shingles need replacing.
